An HVDC Transmission Line for Delivery of Texas Wind Energy to the Southeast
Texas is home to some of the highest capacity factor wind sites in the United States. Presently, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas ("ERCOT") transmission system is being expanded with the CREZ lines to reduce congestion and to better integrate a substantial planned increase in wind generation. The Southeast, on the other hand, has abundant and diverse generation resources, but only limited economic renewable resources.
Pattern Energy Group ("Pattern") is developing the Southern Cross project to add a High Voltage Direct Current ("HVDC") transmission tie between the Southeast and ERCOT to facilitate the further development of additional Texas wind projects by creating access to new markets, while allowing the Southeast to share in Texas' abundant wind resource. This project will allow Texas to expand its traditional role as an energy supplier, adding wind energy to its portfolio of major exports.
