Southern Cross Project Overview

Capacity up to 3,000 MW
Length ~400 miles
Beginning Point ERCOT Interconnection in East Texas
Ending Point Substations in Northeast Mississippi
Scheduled Power Delivery Date 2016+

Some features and benefits of the Southern Cross project include:

  • Access to economical and renewable wind energy supply to Southeast customers
  • Realization of increased income to the state of Texas from the sale of incremental wind energy
  • Creation of new jobs, investment and economic development in Texas (wind) and Louisiana and Mississippi (transmission line and associated HVDC converter stations)
  • Improvement in reliability of both the ERCOT and Southeast transmission grids by providing the ability to access each other's diverse generation resources in times of need
  • Exclusion from regional transmission charges, with costs of the project instead paid for only by companies that contract for capacity on the line
  • Preservation of ERCOT jurisdictional independence from the FERC

Southern Cross Transmission is currently subscribing anchor tenants for capacity on the project. Entities interested in subscribing for capacity as an anchor tenant should contact the development team at southerncross@patternenergy.com. To learn more about the subscription process see Southern Cross’ FERC ruling (EL11-61-000) authorizing the project to charge negotiated rates. This filing can be found here.
